Celebrating Women in Plumbing: Honoring Trailblazers and Looking to the Future

At Harper’s Plumbing, we recognize the hard work, dedication, and expertise that women bring to the trades. As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let’s take a moment to honor the pioneers who paved the way and the women who continue to impact plumbing today.

Breaking Barriers: Lillian Ann Baumbach

In the 1950s, when men dominated trade work, Lillian Ann Baumbach made history as the first woman to earn a Master Plumber’s license in the United States. Growing up in her father’s plumbing business, Lillian developed a passion for the trade at a young age. Despite the societal norms of the time, she pursued her goals, proving her skills by passing the rigorous Master Plumber’s exam—a feat that many of her male counterparts struggled with.

Lillian’s determination and expertise earned her national recognition, and she inspired future generations of women in the trades. Her story is a testament to the resilience and talent of women who refuse to be confined by outdated gender roles.

One of Canada’s First Female Plumber: A Trailblazer in the Trades

While Lillian made history in the U.S., Canada also saw trailblazing women enter the plumbing trade. As highlighted in a CBC article, Debbie Johnston (nee Davies)  made history as Ontario’s first licensed female plumber in 1977. Breaking into a male-dominated industry in the 1970s. Her journey paved the way for more women to enter skilled trades, inspiring future generations to follow in her footsteps. Today, Canadian women continue to make strides in plumbing.

Women in Plumbing Today: Leading the Way in Canada

The plumbing industry is evolving, and more women across Canada are stepping into roles as technicians, business owners, and industry leaders. Women are proving they have the skills and expertise needed to succeed in the trades, helping close the skilled labor gap and bringing fresh perspectives to the field.

Organizations such as Women in Skilled Trades (WIST) and Skills Canada are actively working to support and mentor women pursuing careers in plumbing and other trades. Programs across the country are helping women gain hands-on experience, providing education, and breaking down barriers to entry in historically male-dominated fields.

Harper’s Plumbing: Supporting Women in Trades

At Harper’s Plumbing, we recognize the incredible value women bring to the trade. We love to see women pursuing careers in plumbing, whether through apprenticeships, mentorship programs or by encouraging young girls to consider a future in skilled trades.

On this International Women’s Day, we celebrate the women who have shaped the plumbing industry and those who continue to make strides today. The future of plumbing is bright, and it includes more women than ever!

Let’s continue to support and uplift women in the trades because plumbing isn’t just a man’s job; it’s a job for anyone with skill, dedication, and a passion for the craft.
