When your drains are not keeping up with the amount of water, starting to back up or produce an unpleasant odor, poor drainage or a clog is most likely the culprit. Fats, Oil and Grease are 3 common culprits, and have been given the acronym, FOG.
What are examples of FOG:
- Fats: Butter, margarine, dairy, meat. etc.
- Oils: Salad dressings, cooking or deep fryer oils, olive oil, sauces, etc.
- Grease: Chicken, hamburgers, bacon, etc.
So where can all the FOG go? Actually, in the City of Calgary, our green compost bins are allocated for up to 2 liters of FOG! A great way to use this system and collect the fats, oil or grease is by using paper towel to absorb the liquid and solidify it. The resulting paper towel soaked in FOG can be placed in a compostable bag and taken directly to your green bin.
For individuals in a commercial setting, installing and maintaining a properly sized grease interceptor anywhere FOG is released is requirement under the City of Calgary’s Wastewater bylaw. We have installed several grease interceptors and can assist with any commercial concerns you may have as well.
It is important that we all work together to reduce the amount of FOG that is in our sewers and waterlines. When FOG enters the wastewater system it can create clogs and backups that not only affect your property but can cause backups for your neighbors.
Unfortunately, even in the most diligent of scenarios, clogs and slow drainage can still become an issue. Harper’s Plumbing is here to help you with all your clogs and slow drainage issues.
