Poly B vs. PEX chat box question
Many homeowners in Calgary have never heard of PEX or Poly B waterlines until a home inspector mentions it to them during a real estate transaction.
Here’s the main difference to keep in mind between Poly B and PEX water lines:
Poly B is a flexible grey pipe that was popular between 1985 and 1997 and was installed over copper due to its low cost and ease of installation. However, Poly B has since been discontinued due to issues such as hairline cracks and major line failures.
On the other hand, PEX is a durable, cost-effective, and non-toxic solution that resists freezing damage and does not corrode. Its clear, opaque, red or blue appearance makes it easy to identify.
So what to do if you have Poly B in your home?
Poly B pipe replacement is highly recommended. Poly B pipes can lead to significant water damage as the pipes can rupture, causing massive water damage. In some cases, Poly B pipe has had tiny pin-hole leaks that can go unnoticed for some time and cause mould behind walls, and even onto ceilings of your home. As most homeowners know, water damage can lead to costly repairs. However, what many homeowners may not be aware of is that some insurance companies are re-evaluating coverage on homes where Poly B is still installed.
Harper’s Plumbing is able to help homeowners to replace their Poly B piping with more reliable and durable alternatives such as PEX or copper pipes. Removal of Poly B pipes from your home can reduce the risk of potential leaks and water damage, and increase the overall value and potential ease of sale of your property.
While Poly B replacement can be a rather larger bill due to the extensive nature of the replacement, at Harper’s Plumbing we offer the ability to access financing through our partner FinanceIt. If approved, until September 30th, 2023 we are offering 3 months no payments on any financed purchases.
